Losing Santa Claus

For us geeks who are also Apple fans, each keynote was a little bit like Christmas. We never really knew what we were going to get but we knew it going to be cool. We might have a rough idea based on what we’ve been asking for but it was always a mystery until Steve actually got on stage and delivered the goods.

Because of this secrecy we were surprised and delighted when he showed us new stuff. Steve Jobs was able to restore that childlike sense of wonder we used to feel on Christmas morning. In that way he was a little bit like Santa Claus for geeks. A couple of times a year he’d get on stage and give us something amazing. Once every few years he’d give us something so insanely great it would change our lives. As a kid I didn’t get an AT-AT Walker every Christmas but I certainly remember the year I did.

So losing Steve Jobs is a little bit like losing Santa Claus. Sure, there’s other very smart people at Apple who will collectively carry on the work of fulling his vision of a better world. We’ll continue to get cool and amazing things. But it’s not quite the same as having the man himself to deliver it to us.

BTW, last night my kids and I sat around and played Where My Water? on our various iOS devices for about 45 minutes. We’d check on each other’s progress and help each other solve different puzzles. Engrossed in our own games yet sharing the experience together. It was great.
