Reasons to Not Use the Self-Checkout at the Grocery Store
You’re paying with cash. A human cashier can process a handful of bills and change much faster than you can feed it into a machine.
You’re buying produce. A human cashier deals with produce all the time. They have the routine down pat. They can ring up your cantaloupe much faster than you can navigate through the menus looking for ‘cantaloupe’ only to realize it’s considered a ‘melon’. If you’re trying to buy something that doesn’t have an easily scanned UPC, please go to a real cashier.
You’re buying a lot of stuff. Here’s a rule of thumb. If you can’t hold all of your items in two hands don’t go through the self-checkout line. When it comes to scanning many items a human cashier will be much faster than you. They can bag those items much faster than you too.
The self-checkout line is best when you’re buying a few items which can be easily scanned and paid for with a debit card.
A future blog post will be about how much I hate those touch screen card scanners with an attached STYLUS. Especially when touching the screen doesn’t work and you MUST use the stylus. It’s a huge drag on checkout efficiency and usability. But that’s another blog post.
